Madison
241 Madison, was probably our favorite house, and also the most spectacular. An 1890 mansion built by Horace Lamos, a restauranteur at The Union Depo. The most recent owner was a single lawyer who lived there for 40 years. The last renovations appear to have been done in the 90’s, although the kitchen appeared untouched since the 60’s. The bones of the house were amazing, including an 18 foot high, leaded glass window in the stairway and a full
curved piece of glass in the foyer. The balusters and woodwork on the foyer were extensively detailed, although already painted. To modernize the house, we had to merge the old pantry and kitchen in order to make it large enough and practical for contemporary homeowners. However, we saved and stripped all the original white oak doors, coated with 125 years of paint, and created a floor to ceiling wall of cabinets on the back wall of the kitchen. This amazing custom item was built by David Lucas (@Lucas Home services). Three of the
bathrooms had to be completely updated. One was reconfigured to form a primary suite. In the second bedroom, the remnants of an original fireplace were found beneath the plaster and refitted with an antique mantle. The attic was also finished as a bonus room and basement, made into speak easy bar room. Enjoy the before and after of this magical house.
